04 November 2021

Renewi, working in partnership with Wakefield Council, is pleased to offer Wakefield residents the opportunity to claim their free soil improver from all three Household Waste Recycling Centres across the District. This initiative is to say thank you to residents for recycling their waste over the past year.

What is soil improver?

Soil improver is a product produced from the garden waste collected from households across the Wakefield District. It has been produced by the dedicated composting team at the South Kirkby Waste Treatment Facility. Garden waste is shredded and then composted at temperatures reaching 60 degrees Celsius for a period of 6 weeks. The resulting product is then screened to produce a material that will give benefit to your soil. It contains essential nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorous together with organic matter which is vital for healthy soil. The product is peat free and is a sustainable soil improver with no added chemicals.

Cllr Jack Hemingway, Wakefield Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Climate Change, said: “This is a brilliant opportunity to say thank you to everyone in the Wakefield district who recycles at home, because it really does make a difference.

“Peat-free soil improver is much more sustainable and kinder to habitats, and stops carbon dioxide being released into the atmosphere, so I would encourage our residents to come and collect a bag and help make a difference to our local environment, whilst enjoying your garden.”

200 tonnes of soil improver will be available on a first come, first served basis, while stocks last. The product will be stored loose at all Household Waste Recycling Centres, and bags and bag ties will be available for residents’ convenience.
